Health Lines - Never Too Old To Play

&quot;Never too old to play&quot; is the theme for Older Americans month - May 2012. This theme puts a spotlight on the important role older adults play in sharing their experience, wisdom, and understanding, and passing on that knowledge to other generations in a variety of significant ways. As large numbers of baby-boomers reach retirement age, many communities have increased efforts to provide meaningful opportunities for older adults - many of whom remain physically and socially active through their 80s and beyond.

Health Lines - Free whooping cough vaccination clinic offered for uninsured

The Free Clinic of Southwest Washington will hold a free whooping cough immunization clinic later this month for uninsured adults.

The clinic will administer 500 tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis boosters, commonly referred to as Tdap. The vaccines will be available first-come, first-served to uninsured, low-income adults.

The free vaccine clinic is aimed at day care workers and other adults who are in contact with young children, said Patrick Callahan, clinic director.

The clinic will begin at 5 p.m. May 23 at the Free Clinic, 4100 Plomondon St., in Vancouver.

Typically, the Free Clinic does not provide adult immunizations. But due to the statewide whooping cough epidemic, the clinic organized the upcoming effort, Callahan said.

Since Jan. 1, Washington state health officials have reported 1,284 cases of whooping cough. During the same 18-week period in 2011, the state reported 128 cases. In Clark County, 104 cases have been reported since the start of the year, according to health officials.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is an illness spread through respiratory secretions such as coughing and sneezing. The illness is particularly dangerous, and potentially deadly, for infants, who can develop serious complications such as pneumonia and brain inflammation.

The state recommends children receive five doses of the diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine, commonly known as DTaP, before age 7. Adolescents (ages 11 to 18) and adults (ages 19 to 64) should receive a Tdap booster, according to state recommendations.

Whooping cough vaccines, and all state recommended vaccines, are offered at no cost to children younger than 19 through health care provider offices participating in the state&rsquo;s Childhood Vaccine Program. Providers may charge an office fee for the visit.

The Free Clinic offers child immunization clinics at 5 p.m. on the first, second and third Wednesdays of every month. The clinic will not provide whooping cough vaccines to children at the May 23 event.

For more information about the upcoming adult immunization clinic, call 360-313-1390.

Thank You Choir!

Dear Choir,
We want to thank you for your faithful service throughout the choir season. You give your time on Thursday nights for rehearsals, get up &ldquo;early&rdquo; Sunday mornings, and give extra time during Cantata preparations. We appreciate you using your gifts/talents to serve God and our church family, in the 8:30 service weekly and the Cantatas for Christmas &amp; Easter. We know of 7 people who gave their lives to Christ on Easter Sunday, and your ministry was one of the tools God used to bring them to Him. We look forward to the Choir ministry continuing in the fall. Thank you again for serving Him!

What a wonderful celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord last Sunday. The Choir and orchestra did a tremendous job leading us in worship and Pastor Steve shared a salvation message. Many hearts were encouraged and strengthened, and 7 new lives were born into the family of God. Praise God!

Please keep these new believers in your prayers as they start their journey with Christ. Pray for them to be connected to the family so they can flourish in their faith!

Thank you to everyone who served God and helped bring these new lives to Him - from the nursery to children's church, to ushers, to musicians, to those who took the time to greet and introduce themselves, to the sound crew, to the Sunday School teachers... every part of the body makes it function the way God designed!&nbsp; Thank you!

153 - Look What God Did!

From Craig Schmidt:

A couple of weeks ago I shared with you that I have been sharing Christ with my therapist. She has had many questions since she doesn&rsquo;t know anything about the Lord. It&rsquo;s been great to tell her everything about Christ. If you remember, she just wasn&rsquo;t ready to receive Him yet. Last week I invited her to go to an Easter play with my family and she accepted to go. It was an amazing play about the life of Christ. At the end of the play the pastor asked if there was anyone who wanted to receive Christ. Robyn (my therapist) stood to do this! She received Christ in her life!

Again, this would have never taken place if we hadn&rsquo;t been in the car accident and had to go to therapy.

Thanks to everyone who has been praying the last 2 weeks for her, our prayers have been answered. Praise be to God!!

153 - How Was Your Weekend?

Sharing your faith with someone may start with something as simple as asking &quot; How was your weekend?&quot;...

It's great when God opens the door to share Christ.
I went to my rehab appointment this afternoon because of the car accident I was in. While I was there I asked the therapist how her weekend went. She said &quot;it was kinda weird&quot;. I said why? She said that she went to church for the first time and knows nothing about God.
She went on to say, &quot;the guy up front talking about God seemed to be talking to me and I felt so weird inside&quot;. &quot;it was like he knew me&quot;.
I told her that it was the Lord that was speaking to her. I explained to her that Jesus loves you and has a plan for your life. He won't force himself on you, you have to decide if you want to let Him in! He's knocking to see if you will let Him in.
Long story short I was with her for a whole hour for treatment. I explained to her the gospel and why Jesus died for her, and how she can have eternal life that whole hour. (That hour seemed like only 10 minutes).
It sure boosts your confidence when you share Christ with people. It's been a long time since I've had an opportunity to do this. Now I really pray that the Lord gives me more!!!!

What's your story? Share it with us at <a href="mailto:153@firste.org">153@firste.org
